Painting Lines

Picture
The two most popular ways to paint lines are using a stencil or using tape.  A stencil sounds easier, but success depends on the consistency of the paint, the texture of the surface, and whether it's a windless day or not.  Crisp lines are a little more difficult with a stencil too.

There's also a device called a 'line taping machine', that holds two rolls of tape an equal distance apart and makes applying tape before painting much easier. The paint can be spray paint, or applied with a brush or roller.  When using tape, we find the 3-day painters tape works the best. There are several tape machine manufacturers and their prices vary.  GameCourts.com and will rent or lend a line taping machine to DIY customers.  Click here for painting instructions.

This version of a line taping machine also has a telescopic pole that makes creating the 3-point arc easy and accurate.  Line widths can be adjusted from narrow to wide.  This model costs roughly $750 including the 3-point pole and shipping, although they can be rented or borrowed for considerably less.

Stencils

There are several stencil kits available and their prices range from $15 to $200.  Some are as lightweight as newspaper and others are cardboard or metal.  If the surface you're painting is concrete or asphalt, getting tape to stick is a little trickier and a stencil might work best.  The heavier weight stencils are also reusable, so if you have to redo the job in two years, or plan on doing more than one, a more expensive stencil can be worth the added cost.  Also, the lightweight, newspaper variety are difficult to work with if there's a breeze present.
