Adjustable Goal Systems

Adjustable Goal Systems can be raised and lowered, and make a court much more fun for smaller kids. Depending on the manufacturer, the adjustments are made by cranking a handle or raising and lowering a bar. Adjustable goals should include a backboard pad, as the corner of the backboard can be sharp and cause a serious head injury to an unaware adult.
The features that make a goal durable are the size of the pole (6" is about the maximum), the distance of the overhang (the measurement from the face of the pole to the face of the backboard), and the size of the backboard (48", 60", or 72" are most typical).
There's some debate about glass versus acrylic for backboard material. Early acrylic models had clouding issues and were made with flimsy 1/4" or 3/8" plexiglass. Look for bracing in the center of the backboard as a telltale sign that the backboard isn't very sturdy. Glass backboards are typically heavier.

Standard 'Fixed Height' Goal Systems

Standard goals are just like adjustable goals, expect they're not adjustable. Some models can be set at heights other than 10', but adjustment isn't something that can be accomplished in minutes or by children.
The same features that make an adjustable goal nice apply to a standard goal: size of the pole, overhang, and the size of the backboard.
Polyester powder coating makes for a durable weatherproof finish, a universal anchor system makes relocating your goal easy, and pole pads can protect a player from serious injury when colliding with the pole.
A backboard pad (as shown in the photo to the left) is more important if the height of the goal is less than 10'. Most goals incorporate an aluminum frame around the backboard and the corners can be extremely sharp.
